Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM)
Resource development (particularly in
relation to extractive mining industries) frequently occurs on the territories
of Indigenous peoples. On a global scale, resource development companies are
engaging with Indigenous Peoples impacted by their operations and such
proponent are frequently applying international law standards and the emerging
guidelines on FPIC to engage with Indigenous land owners. This course will
examine the emerging standards of FPIC and how these might be best applied when
mining is proposed on the land of traditional Indigenous Peoples.
The Masterclass will feature experts from
various constituencies and coordinated by Associate Professor of Law Margaret
Stephenson who has herself done pioneering comparative analysis of FPIC
interpretations worldwide.
