The Converging Technologies (Indo, Bio, Cogno, Nano) pose a serious risk to both social and environmental systems, unless and until methods are adopted to distinguish the prospective benefits from the detriments, and take active steps to avoid or ameliorate the detriments.

How the misuse of design parameters can produce social and environmental hazards, but the appropriate use of design parameters can separate the benefits from the detriments, promote the benefits, and discourage the detriments.
